Amanda Blunden
My landscapes are expressions of emotional spaces, driven by my desire for open expanses and solitude to clear my head of ‘noise’. These ‘quiet’ paintings are intended to reflect my need for calmness and solace.
In reality, I have found incredible comfort and restoration in solo camping trips to remote parts of the UK. During these journeys, my tent became more than just a shelter; it was a sanctuary, offering me a personal refuge, especially in the years before I became a mother. Whenever life felt overwhelming, I would pack my old Renault, bring along my dog, and set out to explore the coastlines of Cornwall, Ireland, and the Isle of Skye.
Childhood memories also play a crucial role in my art, particularly of family holidays in Cornwall and Wales, evoking a deep sense of contentment. Holidays with my own family in Cornwall over the past 25 years and self-led artist retreats have further inspired my practice.
The colour pink recurs in my paintings—a shade that represents nurture and comfort. Even the tiniest touch of pink can shift the overall mood of a piece, giving it a sense of warmth and well-being.
I enjoy painting in layers and creating tension through mark-making. A delicate thread of pastel can suggest fragility, which I like to contrast with darker, brooding forms, exploring the interplay between vulnerability and strength.
My process involves a mix of purposeful exploration and intuition. I start with photos, sketches, and collages, but as the work progresses, it is guided by the push and pull of the painting process itself. This dynamic approach allows the emotional core of the piece to emerge, reflecting the intricate balance of calmness and turmoil that underpins my experience of the world and my quest to capture the beauty of the natural landscape.
