Elżbieta Smoleńska opens her home gallery with vibrant travel photographs and artefacts gathered on her journeys. A former BBC World Service journalist, she tackles migration, European identity, environmental stewardship and her Polish heritage through collage, screen-print and assemblage.
Guided by Tadeusz Kantor’s idea of the “re-imagined object”, she interweaves her own images with found photos, objects and paper detritus, creating limited-edition screen prints on distinctive handmade papers. (Putney School of Art) Smoleńska will show some of her distinctive art installations: “On the Distaff Side”—a genealogical tree constructed from vintage weaving shuttles and “My Bucket List”, an ironic photographic series critiquing our throw-away culture.
Previously voted the most exciting venue of Wandsworth Artists’ Open House, Smoleńska’s gallery once again promises an engaging, thought-provoking visit.
